Accolades

CINQUE VELE

The highest accolade awarded annually by Legambiente and the Italian Touring Club to Italy's best seaside and lakeside resorts in the "Il Mare più Bello" (The Most Beautiful Sea) guide. It evaluates not only the beauty of the beaches and the cleanliness of the water, but also rewards environmental sustainability and land management.

SITO MESSAGGERO DI PACE UNESCO

An honorary title awarded to places and historic centers that have distinguished themselves, both past and present, as symbols of encounter, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence among peoples and cultures. The recognition was awarded to the historic center of Otranto, marked by tragic historical events such as the Ottoman invasion of 1480, which over time have transformed into a message and an active commitment to interreligious and intercultural dialogue. The presence of symbolic places such as the Cathedral of the Annunciation, with its famous floor mosaic, and the Aragonese Castle gives even greater meaning to this title.

GRANELLO D’ORO

An initiative promoted by the Apulia Region to highlight, enhance, and spread the best practices for sustainable and inclusive beach experiences along the coast. An important certification awarded based on verifiable requirements and on services and interventions that have already been implemented. A system designed to reward those who have chosen to tangibly invest in the quality of their seaside offerings while simultaneously encouraging a path of continuous improvement. The city of Otranto received the award for two of its urban beaches: I Gradoni and Riviera degli Haethey. In the first case, the municipal administration's effort to make the beach accessible to everyone was recognized, as has been happening for many years through the Abil Beach project. In the second case, the focus on the Haethey area rewards the water sports project, highlighted by the recent Waterpolo experience. To these recognitions, we must add the renewed urban attention to the entire northern area, where a nature and landscape protection project in the 'Castellana' locality has recently been completed, and the call for tenders for the 'CIS- Porto Craulo' project is about to be published.

BANDIERA VERDE DEI PEDIATRI ITALIANI

An award created in 2008 by pediatrician Italo Farnetani, given annually to seaside resorts whose coastlines and services are deemed child- and family-friendly, based on the assessments provided by a network of hundreds of Italian and foreign pediatricians. The Green Flag is based on parameters of safety, comfort, and children's health.

BORGHI PIÙ BELLI D’ITALIA

Otranto is included in the list of "The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" because its historic center, enclosed by Aragonese walls and overlooking the Adriatic Sea, is one of the most iconic places in Salento and Italy. This certification enhances and promotes the historical, artistic, cultural, and landscape heritage of small, inhabited Italian villages.
