Otranto: The Gateway to the Salento Path and its Wonders

Otranto, a city of profound history and charm, stands as a crucial point in the heart of Salento, especially for those wishing to embark on the captivating “Cammino del Salento” (Salento Path). It is from here that the two main routes of the path, the Via del Mare (Sea Route) and the Via dei Borghi (Villages Route), converge, offering a unique experience blending nature and culture.

The Cammino del Salento: An Unmissable Experience

The Cammino del Salento is an extraordinary opportunity to “challenge your limits, find yourself, and discover the most beautiful and authentic Salento.” This trekking experience in Puglia unfolds along two distinct routes that start from Porta Napoli in Lecce and share a common destination: the De Finibus Terrae Sanctuary in Leuca, where Italy meets the Adriatic and Ionian Seas.

  • Via del Mare: This 115 km coastal itinerary, divided into 5 stages, offers “breathtaking views, golden beaches, and the enchantment of Salento’s nature.” For some stretches, you walk directly on the beach or through Aleppo pine forests.
  • Via dei Borghi: At 135 km and 6 stages, this is a more “culturally and artistically rich” route. It winds through the hinterland for the first three days, among “country lanes, dry stone walls, and ancient olive trees,” before joining the sea for the last three days.

What to Do in Otranto and Along the Path:

From Otranto onwards, and thus in the last three stages, “the two routes coincide.” Here, you can immerse yourself in an enchanting landscape and enjoy unique experiences:

  • Coastal Trekking: Walk the mid-coast trails, admiring the “coastal towers, natural pools, caves, and small bays.”
  • Grotta della Poesia (Cave of Poetry): An unmissable experience is a visit to the Grotta della Poesia. By showing your Pilgrim’s Passport, admission is free from May 1st to October 15th.
  • Local Craftsmanship: At the “OtrantFatto” workshop, Pilgrim’s Passport holders will receive a magnet, a small souvenir of your journey and a way to support local businesses.
  • Nature and Freedom: The path offers the chance to feel the “freedom to choose what time to start, free to discover where that fork in the road leads, free from those ‘four walls’ that oppress you.” Enjoy the “sea and sky as far as the eye can see, unspoiled nature, less-traveled paths, and ancient olive trees.”

The Cammino del Salento offers various ways to experience this adventure, adapting to every need:

  • In a small organized group: With a guide, luggage transport between stages, and a support vehicle, for those who prefer a guided, worry-free experience.
  • Independently with organization: The Cammino del Salento team handles everything, providing the Pilgrim’s Passport, detailed stage descriptions, booking accommodation, and experiences along the route.
  • Do it yourself: Purchase your Pilgrim’s Passport and embark on your adventure with complete freedom.

Useful Tools and Services for the Path:

To make your experience even smoother and more complete, the Cammino del Salento offers various tools and services:

  • Pilgrim’s Passport: This essential document “always accompanies the walker, attesting to their identity, condition, and intentions.” It’s a true “pilgrim’s diary where you can get a stamp in every town reached,” allowing you to jot down your impressions and thoughts. It also offers “discounts and benefits” in hostels, B&Bs, campsites, restaurants, museums, and affiliated experiences. It also contains useful tips on “partial kilometers,” “water points,” and “must-see places,” as well as “checklists” for things to do and for your backpack. Purchasing the Passport actively contributes to the “improvement of the Cammino del Salento.” You can purchase it online or pick it up at the Lobby Collective Hostel in Lecce, an affiliated hostel.
  • GPX Tracks: Although the path is marked with orange arrows, it is highly recommended to carry the “GPX tracks” with you. These can be viewed on smartphones using mapping apps like Koomot, and a detailed guide is available for their use. A power bank is recommended to recharge your smartphone, given the prolonged use of the integrated GPS. The tracks are updated regularly, so it’s advisable to check for any updates before departure.
  • Luggage Transport: To “walk light” and fully enjoy the experience, you can request luggage transport service between stages. Your backpack (up to 15 kg) will be collected in the morning from your overnight accommodation and delivered by 3 PM to your room at the next stage’s accommodation. Prices vary depending on the number of people and are discounted for Pilgrim’s Passport holders. Please note that the service is not available in July and until August 25th.
